Glycogen:
Glycogen is the storage form of glucose in animals and humans which is analogous to the starch in plants. Glycogen is synthesized and stored mainly in the liver and the muscles.

Glycogen is a readily mobilized storage form of glucose. It is a very large, branched polymer of glucose residues (Figure 21.1) that can be broken down to yield glucose molecules when energy is needed.

Figure 21.1. Glycogen Structure.

Figure 21.1

Glycogen Structure. In this structure of two outer branches of a glycogen molecule, the residues at the nonreducing ends are shown in red and residue that starts a branch is shown in green. The rest of the glycogen molecule is represented by R.
Glycogen is not as reduced as fatty acids are and consequently not as energy rich. Why do animals store any energy as glycogen? Why not convert all excess fuel into fatty acids? Glycogen is an important fuel reserve for several reasons. The controlled breakdown of glycogen and release of glucose increase the amount of glucose that is available between meals. Hence, glycogen serves as a buffer to maintain blood-glucose levels. Glycogen's role in maintaining blood-glucose levels is especially important because glucose is virtually the only fuel used by the brain, except during prolonged starvation. Moreover, the glucose from glycogen is readily mobilized and is therefore a good source of energy for sudden, strenuous activity. Unlike fatty acids, the released glucose can provide energy in the absence of oxygen and can thus supply energy for anaerobic activity.

(३ )SUGAR DRINKS UP FATTY LIVER DISEASE RISK

Researchers have found that blocking a molecule called GLUT8 that carries amounts of fructose -present naturally in fruit and added to soft drinks -into liver cells .Blocking GLUT8 in mice reduced the amount of fructose entering the organ and  prevented fatty liver disease .

(४) EDIBLE FILMS TO PRESERVE BREAD LONGER

New edible films containing oils from cloves and oregano can preserve bread longer than commercial additives by keeping bacteria and mold at bay .The study appeared in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

(५) Jal neti (जल नेति ),the practice of cleansing the nasal passages using warm salty  water ,dislodges and dissolves internal build up and allows for easier flushing out of impurities .

(६ )Tulsi extract has been shown to reduce cortisol (stress hormone ),lower adrenal gland hypertrophy ,and normalise stress -induced hyperglycemia in rodents .
